This is the perfect receiver if you want top of the line features in a small, stylish package. Like its sibling the NR1402, this receiver has high power (a real 50 watts) and a compact size that is about 1/2 the size of a normal receiver. The NR1602 also adds support for 7 channels of surround sound, Apple AirPlay, front USB input (which can play files from most USB sources and cell phones) and ethernet networking capabilities (including internet radio, Rhapsody, Napster, Pandora, Flickr and DLNA 1.4 audio/photo streaming). It can also be updated over the internet. You can control your iPhone/iPod/iPad and select songs using the on screen menu. The main reasons to upgrade to this receiver from the NR1402 are:
- AirPlay and front USB port. If you have an iPhone/iPod/iPad or any other USB source, these upgrades provide both convenience and better sound. You can connect some of these items to the NR1402 using the analog headphone jack, but you won't be able to select songs on your screen or hear your music in digital quality.
- Seven channels of surround sound vs. five channels. If you think you will be using 7.1 sound, you want the NR1602.
- Networking capabilities. The NR1602 can connect to your network via ethernet port and can play many types of media. It can play internet radio, Rhapsody, Napster and Pandora and is also DLNA 1.5 certified for Audio/Photo Streaming.
- Two zone capability. The NR1602 has enough amplifiers to control 5 speakers in one room and 2 in a second room, so you can watch a movie in one room and listen to music in another room.
- Video conversion to HDMI. If you have non-HDMI video sources (like old VCRs, DVD players, etc.) the NR1602 will convert these signals to HDMI so that you only need to run one wire to your TV.
If you plan on using any of these features, we highly recommend the NR1602. We are especially fond of the various forms of Apple and other digital music compatibility. It really does make it easy to access all of your music and feels very high tech. If you have more basic needs, you will get the same sound quality with the NR1402 and can save a few dollars.

Networking Capability for Music Streaming
Built-in networking functionality makes the NR1602 an ideal media center. On-Screen Wizard Simplifies Setup
The receiver features auto setup and room calibration and allows you to navigate setup on your TV screen via HDMI. Plug in the included calibration microphone, place it in your favorite seat, and run the setup wizard. The Audyssey MultEQ automatically analyzes your room's acoustic properties to determine the optimal settings. If you wish, you can manually fine-tune individual settings, such as bass, treble, speaker distance, and other properties.
