The Front And Center speaker systems from Orb are designed to compete with systems like the Bose 3 2 1 and others that claim to provide a full surround sound experience from one or two speakers. The Front & Center discards the smoke and mirrors and delivers rich, full-range audiophile sound without making a lot of promises it cannot keep.
So, what will you get with the Front And Center system? Well, you will get full-range stereo sound and a dedicated center channel speaker.
Wiring is a breeze with the front and center. You can place the 3 speakers exactly where you would place the single speaker from the smoke and mirrors system, or you can spread the speakers out a little more for even greater effect. For example, if you were going to just place the speaker from the Bose 3 2 1 system on your TV or somewhere close by, you can do the same with the Front And Center. Even if you put all of the speakers together, you will get better separation and imaging than most of the other systems can ever dream of providing. Combine that with the clarity and detail that Orb is known for, and the depth of the Super Eight subwoofer, and you have a winning combination that will please you for years to come.
You can also place your left and right front speakers on our custom HOSS floor stands, which are a work of art and feature 25 pounds of hand cut and polished steel. While they are a labor intensive luxury, the web direct price of the Front & Center allows you add the HOSS stands for less than the retail cost of most of the gimmick systems. So, with no rear speaker wire to run, there won't be a lot of speaker wire visible in your installation and there are various ways to even hide that.
The Gimmick Systems have plenty of dirty secrets, so let's dish:
Proprietary DVD Units - Many of the Gimmick Systems can only use the expensive DVD player that comes w/ the system. While it might be a simplified unit, the use of non-standard DVD players has many bad results. First, the DVD standards is changing to HD-DVD and Blu Ray in 2006. The DVD player that comes w/ the Gimmick System isn't going to be able to play those DVDs, and it's likely you won't have any way to change the unit or upgrade. Why? Because many of thes systems are "closed" systems, meaning they are designed to work as one and you can't switch out any of the parts.
No Upgrade Path - With the Orb Front & Center, you can upgrade to a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 surround system at any time, simply by adding additional speakers.
Limited Inputs - Many of the all in one systems are designed to be somewhat limited in their ability to accept inputs from other components. While you might be able to connect your cable and one or two other audio and video components (TiVo, VCR, etc.) forget about connecting more than that. And if you like to use the highest quality connections (HDMI, DVI and component for video, and digital or optical for audio), forget about that as well. You'll be lucky if there are enough connections at all...there's no chance you'll have these high quality connections available.
If you are looking for wireless speakers, the Front & Center is probably a good choice for you, too. The truth is, there are no wireless speakers, no matter what anyone claims. Speakers require amplified power. That means they need to be connected to an amplifier or receiver with speaker wire, or have one built in. The problem is, if a "wireless" speaker has an amplifier built in, it then needs to be plugged into the wall. That's not really wireless, now is it? Worse, the built in amps in these systems are generally low quality and won't sound as good as you want them to.
