We have no idea what this customer was trying to accomplish.  The only clue was the file name 'Sonostar' which manufactures the dome. Must sound super cool in the center of those ORBs!

Spheres minimize materials and maximize strength

A geodesic dome is a hemispherical lattice-shell based on a geodesic polyhedron. The triangular elements of the dome are structurally rigid and distribute the structural stress throughout the structure, making geodesic domes able to withstand very heavy loads for their size.

It’s average strength is the strongest of any three dimensional shape. This is the reason spheres are everywhere in nature and in fact the entire universe.  You don't see many box planets or stars...
